Frequently Asked Questions About The TAE40116 Upgrade Course

The TAE40110 course, known previously as the standard training for the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, was superseded by the TAE40116 in 2016. What does this mean for TAE40110 certificate holders currently working in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) industry?

What this means is that TAE40110 holders must enrol in the TAE40116 upgrade course and complete their new training to continue working in the VET sector. There is a deadline set, too; the first deadline (April 1, 2019) was moved to a later date (July 1, 2019) to account for the volume of trainers and assessors who require the TAE40116 upgrade.

Are there requirements for the TAE40116?

There are a few. For starters, the TAE40116 upgrade is only available to trainers and assessors who currently hold the TAE40110 certificate. Those who hold other certifications will need to take the full TAE40116 course training by July 1, 2019, to continue working in their field.

Another requirement is that the person enrolling into the upgrade course must have access to a working laptop or desktop computer; they need not own their work units, only that they have access to it and stable internet connection as well. Working via public libraries will do.

The upgrade course should ideally take no longer than three months from the date of enrolment to complete. That being said, Registered Training Organisations (also known as RTOs) are aware and considerate of circumstances such as medical or family emergencies. For this reason, most RTOs allot twelve months from the date of enrolment to students, allowing them to complete their training at a reasonable pace without compromising their daily lives.

What happens when someone fails to complete the course upgrade in twelve months? For trainers and assessors already working in the VET sector, this means that they will have to stop working in their field until such a time that they’ve completed the course upgrade.

The same goes for those who are just starting in the VET industry without any certification: they will be required to take the TAE40116 course in full to comply with the current mandated training. Those who hold other certifications may be required to take the full TAE40116 course as well, to be able to continue working. For more clarification on the matter, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your local RTO.

Class density is a common concern among students of the course. Will there be too many students per class? Will the class be cancelled if there are too few students enrolled? The answers vary depending on the RTO, but generally speaking, each TAE40116 class averages at ten to twelve students.

The higher ceiling for the number of students per training class should be no more than fifteen students; any more should raise alarms in a prospective student. Again, don’t hesitate to ask your RTO about the class density for your training.

These are just some common questions asked about the TAE40116 course upgrade. For more information, get in touch with your local RTO.
