Obtaining a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment: Understanding Australia’s VET Sector

Choosing the right career is no longer limited to finding out what good skills one has or what one is passionate about. It could also mean choosing between taking up a four-year tertiary course or taking vocational training.

The second factor is generally affected by a person’s financial capacity. Often, with the rising costs of traditional academic courses mounting annually, one may decide to find something suitable in Australia’s VET or Vocational Education and Training sector. Of course, there are cases wherein a person’s passion or skills may fall outside established academe.

What the VET Sector Covers

According to the Parliament of Australia’s guide on the vocational and training sector, in 2017 alone, some 4.2 million students were enrolled in VET with an Australian training provider. This number represented almost a quarter of the Australian population aged 15-64 years. In comparison, there were 1.5 million higher education students enrolled in higher education providers, and 3.8 million school students enrolled all over Australia.

Of those VET students mentioned above:

  • 52% were male
  • 3.8% were identified as Indigenous
  • 5% reported having a disability
  • 4.4% were international students

For domestic students:

  • 65.7% reside in major cities
  • 31.5% live in regional areas
  • 2.9% reside in remote areas

Vocational education in Australia is a large and complex industry, with a variety of government and non-government organisations responsible for different functions related to the sector.

Training outcomes from the Training and Education (TAE) Training Program are endorsed by the Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC). It is of vital importance that TAE training products are delivered to the highest quality levels so that trainers and assessors hold all the skills and knowledge capabilities required.

The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) is the national regulator for Australia’s VET sector. They carry the responsibility for the registration of training providers and accreditation of courses. ASQA also manages the registration of VET and English language course providers who wish to offer courses to overseas students studying in Australia. Victoria and Western Australia providers are not covered by ASQA but by their particular state regulator, the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority and Western Australian Training Accreditation Council.
