Getting started in the security industry can be as easy as enrolling for a training course and, granting that one passes the course assessments, applying for a security licence in their state. Registered Training Organisations or RTOs provide the necessary training through certificate courses, helping prospective security personnel to gain the skills they need when working in the industry.
Those looking to work in the industry understandably have some enquiries about the Certificate III in Security Operations training and other requirements. Below are some questions associated with working in the security industry.
What are the basic requirements for enrolling into a Certificate III course?
When applying for a Security licence in Queensland, the applicant will be expected to apply for a security licence. There are many types of licences, but there are general requirements that are uniform across the board. For this reason, applicants for the Certificate III course are similarly required to adhere to specific requirements.
These requirements are as follows: one must be at least eighteen years old at the time of applying for their licencet. They must either be citizens or permanent residents of Australia, or in possession of a visa that permits them to apply for security training and employment. Finally, they must be able to provide proof of good character or moral standing (if requested by the RTO).
What makes the Certificate III course different from other similar Security Operations courses?
The Certificate III in Security Operations is a step up from the Certificate II in many ways. One of the differences between the certificate courses is that the Certificate III has training units not included in the Certificate II. The Certificate III also allows the security personnel to take up additional course training to aid in their work.
On the other hand, the Certificate II only provides the training necessary for the application of an Unarmed Licence in Security in Queensland; security personnel will need to retrain in the Certificate III to apply for Bodyguard training.
Where can I get additional training for my Security Licence?
Diversifying one’s skills helps with workplace efficiency. For this reason, RTOs offer additional training to security personnel for a fee. Such training courses include Cash in Transit or Bodyguard courses, which can be completed within a day. These training courses are not part of the Certificate III in Security Operations for new guards, and should be completed separately.
What is involved with renewing my Security Licence?
As part of regular conduct of business, the Office of Fair Trading will send a notice to licence holders that their licences are expiring six weeks before the official date of licence expiry. This notice serves as a permit to renew. Licence holders are given options for renewal: there is the one-year multi-function licence and the three-year licence. Both licences come with associated fees; don’t hesitate to inquire with the Office of Fair Trading regarding these fees.
Once the licence holder has submitted their application for renewal and paid the associated fees, they will be deemed licenced until they receive the new licence – they will be provided with a certificate stating that they have been approved for licence renewal in the meantime.
However, if a licence holder’s application has been refused, withdrawn, or otherwise non-compliant to Office of Fair Trading requirements, they will not be provided with the certificate of approved licence application. In this event, the licence holder must undergo the requisite training and reapply for a licence as a new applicant.
Given this information, the Office of Fair Trading strongly urges licence holders to keep their postal addresses updated continuously.
