Course Competencies for Certificate 2 in Security Operations

There are a lot of employment options in the security industry. Places like offices, hospitals, hotels, schools, and clubs are always in need of security personnel. There are career options in the industry as well, which could lead to security personnel rising through the ranks to become a security team manager or oversee and supervise a security department in larger institutions.

Given the variety of opportunities available through the industry, there are specific requirements needed of applicants. One of these requirements is the Certificate 2 in Security Operations. The Certificate 2 is the minimum certification requirement for anyone looking to work in the security industry.

Another requirement is the Unarmed Security licence for Queensland applicants. There are other requirements, as well; for example, the applicant must be at least eighteen years old at the age of their application for their licence, and must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or staying in the country under a valid visa that permits working hours.

Here are some course competencies included in the CPP20212 Security Operations training.

Course Competencies

CPPSEC2011B Control exits to and exits from premises

One of the functions of a security officer or personnel is managing the flow of foot traffic through the entry points of their assigned area of responsibility. In aptly managing and controlling the egress and ingress points, the security personnel can more clearly and systematically identify possible security risks and threats before these risks or threats can even enter the premises.

CPPSEC2012A Monitor and control individual or crowd behaviour

Security personnel are expected to be able to manage not just individual behaviour but also crowd behaviour. Security risks may come in the form of a loud individual, or a group of individuals; it is crucial that the personnel or staff assigned to security are ready and capable to handle either scenario if a breach of security occurs.

CPPSEC2014A Operate basic security equipment

Security work doesn’t involve a lot of machinery that needs to be operated, but there are tools and equipment that security personnel can use to make their job easier. For this reason, the CPP20212 training course teaches the course students how to operate – and to an extent, troubleshoot – the tools of the security trade.

CPPSEC2015A Patrol premises

Patrolling the premises is a task that security officers or personnel are responsible for. Through the CPPSE2015A course competency unit, the trainee is taught methods for preparing for patrol, observing and monitoring their area of responsibility, and identifying risks and threats that may be present in the vicinity or surroundings. As well, the course competency helps the trainee in identifying and responding to security risk situations.

First Aid and CPR Unit

HLTAID003 Provide first aid

CPR and First Aid are skills that everyone ideally should have. Because of the value of these skills, the HLTAID003 course competency unit is often included in the CPP20212 training to train security personnel in how to handle incidents where physical harm has occurred. In having CPR and First Aid training, security personnel can confidently treat injuries or wounds that may arise during risk or threat events until emergency services can arrive.

There’s more to security work than just checking bags and patting people down; a whole career track awaits anyone with a dedicated mindset.
